"The 330d is a car without significant caveat" One of the occupational hazards of being a motoring journalist is answering the tricky question of what's the best car in the world. Of course there are fantasy cars like the Rolls Royce Phantom and the Bugatti Veyron to consider but most people want to know what the best car that normal people can afford. I used to have a fall back option in the Ford Focus but times have changed and the Focus is now no longer head and shoulders above the c...

| BMW X3 COUPE,
the ultimate arriving machine
(03/04/2006) by Car and Driving |

"No rival can quite duplicate the BMW's driving experience..." There's something reassuring about the BMW 3 Series Coupe. It's a car that springs no nasty surprises. What you see is very much what you get - the benchmark executive sports coupe. Being a target for the rest of the pack to shoot at isn't an easy task and BMW have made the job of the chasing bunch that much trickier by continually moving the target. So it is that the latest 3 Series Coupe benefits from a raft of improvement...

| BMW X3 330I,
down and thirty

"The 330i offers serious speed without catastrophic running costs" I love BMW's M3. Love it with a passion. Any excuse, however contrived, will do if it means a spell behind the wheel. That hollow metallic engine note, the beautiful chassis balance and the gut-wrenching acceleration and braking are all utterly addictive. The problem is I can't afford one and even if I could, the two door coupe shape wouldn't go down at all well with her indoors. Compromise can so often be a dirty word, ...

class without the cost?
(03/04/2006) by Car and Driving |

"No rival can quite duplicate the BMW's driving experience..." BMW's latest 3 Series Coupe has quickly established itself as a definitive model in what is a highly fashion-conscious marketplace. Only the prices have provided cause for concern amongst those who must sign their own cheques. Hence the popularity of the entry-level four cylinder 318Ci version featured here. Like its six cylinder stablemates, this car is longer, wider, safer and faster than its illustrious predecessor,...

CLUBSPORT, clubbed out

"If the M3 had never existed, we'd be lauding the 330Ci Clubsport as the best driver's coupe available for halfway sensible money." What makes a good coupe? On the basis that it should be stunningly voluptuous, reassuringly impractical and smugly exclusive, the BMW 3 Series Coupe is something of a duffer. Just when saloon cars were being styled to resemble coupes, the profile of BMW's two-door wasn't dissimilar to the saloon. This despite the only common external parts being the door ha...

| BMW X3 318D,
smart money (03/04/2006) by Car and Driving
"The 318d offers a relatively cost effective first step on the diesel 3 Series ladder" If the BMW 318d were a pop star, it'd be Jim from The Corrs; the one you don't tend to look at in an otherwise glamorous line up. The M3 and the more powerful diesel models may make car journalists hearts go a-flutter and attract the flowery prose but the plain Jane 318d might just be the smartest buy in the whole 3 Series line up. Until this point, we'd given that accolade to the 320d, but the junior...
